Stallone causes huge upset in Barry’s Tea decider

Outsider Stallone Bart caused a huge upset when defying odds of 7-1 to take Saturday night’s final of the Barry’s Tea Open 750 at Curraheen Park on Saturday.

Trained by Bridie Moore for David and Jack Bourke, the son of Premier Fantasy chose the perfect time to find his trapping boots and, in doing so, was able to get the better of Mountaylor Ace in the early stages.

A length clear passing the stands on the first circuit, with the remaining runners some six or seven lengths further adrift, the progressive stayer maintained a strong gallop from the front. Gambled-on favourite Dream Winner came from the pack, briefly looking dangerous, but the leader was not for catching, running on strongly to score by three and a half lengths in 41.93.

John Kiely dominated the undercard, recording a terrific treble courtesy of Abzorbit, Kranky Ma and Sede Vacante.

Abzorbit was seeking a hat-trick when he went to traps for the first heat of the Willie Kenny Memorial A2, and a customary show of early pace carried him clear to the turn.

The field stacked up behind him between the last two turns but he was not to be denied, hanging on grimly to repel the final flourish of Castlelyons Ralf by neck in 28.96.

The middle leg of the treble came from Kranky Ma, who easily accounted for her rivals in the first semi-final of the iDrive School of Motoring A3.

Having struggled to find her best form for much of the year, she bounced right back this time, leaving some useful rivals toiling. She made every yard of the running, stretching right away to score in a best-of-the-night 28.59.

Sede Vacante completed the treble with a smooth success in the last race. A couple of sharpeners over the sprint trip served notice that a return to form was imminent and he certainly took a significant step in the right direction this time.

Although he went for his break a touch early, he recovered to break on terms. The most impressive moment of the display came halfway to the turn when he accelerated stylishly to move clear into the bend. It was plain sailing from there as he converted a healthy lead into a similar winning margin in 28.84.
