Webber cools title talk after Silverstone victory

Mark Webber delivered a drive to match the glorious sunshine at Silverstone as the Red Bull man clinched an impressive victory at the British Grand Prix yesterday.

The Australian ambushed Fernando Alonso in the closing laps, passing the Ferrari man with a well executed move around the outside with five laps left to secure his second win of the season.

Webber, who lives only a few miles from the Northamptonshire circuit, now finds himself only 13 points behind Alonso and with a great chance to mount a challenge for his first world championship.

With speculation surrounding Webber’s future at Red Bull and some reports linking the Australian with a move to partner Alonso at Ferrari next season, this performance will do his future in the sport little harm.

“We will enjoy today’s result, really soak it up, that is what is important,” he said. “We have to remember how hard we have to work to get these results and tomorrow morning it’s Hockenheim.

“That is what it has to be about and it is a long, long season and I am not getting too fired up with Championship positions at the moment.”

Alonso on the other hand will be let down at missing the chance to become this season’s first back-to-back winner, as Red Bull’s tyre strategy proved better than the Italians. The two-time world champion will however be comforted by the fact that he remains in control at the top of the standings.

There was little to cheer for the Brits in the sellout 125,000 strong crowd, as their three home drivers endured a frustrating time.

Scot Paul Di Resta was able to watch Andy Murray’s Wimbledon final after suffering a puncture on the first lap. The retirement marked the first time the Force India driver has failed to finish a race since Turkey, 24 races ago.

McLaren’s Jenson Button claimed a solitary point after fighting through the field from 18th to secure a 10th place finish. Silverstone has been somewhat of a boogey track for Button, in his 13 season in the sport he has failed to even claim a podium on his home track.

His team-mate Lewis Hamilton finished where he started, in eighth place, further denting his championship chances. The 2008 world champion drops to fourth place in the standings, now 37 points behind Alonso and eight behind third placed man Sebastian Vettel who claimed the final spot on the podium on Sunday.

Alonso’s team-mate Felipe Massa turned in his best performance for some time, finishing fourth with Lotus duo Kimi Raikkonen and Romain Grosjean following him home.

Michael Schumacher got by a slow moving Hamilton to snatch seventh in his Mercedes the final few laps.

There was drama in the pit lane too when Kamui Kobayashi struck some of his pit crew after coming in far too fast. Although one of the mechanics was taken to the medical centre, Sauber can count themselves more than lucky for the sharp reflexes of its pit crew after a truly scary incident.

Kobayashi’s teammate Sergio Perez was also involved in the wars after being shunted out of the race by Pastor Maldonado. Perez was left furious at the Williams man. “He is a stupid driver,” he said. ” He has no respect for the other drivers.”
