Timotin claims title

Ireland’s Jennifer Timotin yesterday marked herself down as a very promising player for the future as she captured the girls’ singles title in the Tennis Europe U14 Circuit event at the Tennis Ireland National Training Centre in Dublin.

No 6 seed Timotin overpowered the No 5 seed, Austria’s Anna Kraus, on a 6-1 6-2 scoreline in the final to maintain the one-sided nature of her four earlier matches during the week.

In the semi-finals, Timotin thrashed the No 4 seed, Italy’s Rosanna Maffei, 6-0 6-2, and in the quarter-finals the Irish player dumped out the top seed, Russia’s Valeria Deminova, on a 6-2 6-1 margin. All told, Timotin dropped only a remarkably low total of 12 games in her five matches.

Elsewhere, Ireland’s Amy Bowtell, the No 7 seed, exited in the quarter-finals of the ITF Women’s Circuit in Wrexham, Wales to Japan’s No 3 seed, Mai Minokoshi, 6-3 7-5.

However, the Greystones player will be reasonably satisfied with her week, as it was her first tournament back after a three month break to fit in sitting for her Leaving Certificate. Home
