Kart driver Sheahan gets nine-month ban

Cork kart driver Cian Sheahan has been banned for nine months after being found guilty of an anti-doping violation.

The 26-year-old, affiliated to Motorsport Ireland, was found to have taken cannabis in advance of a competition.

Sheahan competed in a Munster Kart Club Race meeting at Watergrasshill, on March 11 last and a sample tested positive for the presence of a prohibited substance or its metabolite or marker, tetrahydrocannabinol (cannabis).

Though cannabis may not enhance performance, authorities took into consideration the concentration of the prohibited substance in deciding the severity of the sanction.

The panel also gave regard to the timely admission by the athlete of the offence.
