De La Salle turn on the power to crush Tallow

TALLOW crashed to one of their most ignominious Waterford SHC defeats ever when they were crushed by 21 points by rampant De La Salle in a hopelessly one-sided SHC quarter-final at Fraher Field, Dungarvan yesterday.

From the first minute to last, this was a monumental mismatch, all the more amazing given that the pre-match consensus was that it would most probably go down to the wire.

De La Salle ruled the roost, however, and enjoyed total dominance in every area of the field. Tallow failed to register a solitary score from play and might have been even more heavily defeated had De La Salle not clearly put on the brakes in the closing quarter. Even at that, however, they almost couldn’t fail to score the late goals finished by substitutes Paddy Kenny and Eoin Madigan.

Ironically, De La Salle’s John Mullane didn’t raise a flag from play either, but his ten points from placed balls was testimony to his unerring accuracy from placed balls throughout.

Leading 0-11 to 0-1 at half-time with Tallow’s solitary score coming from a Paul O’Brien free, they fleetingly raised their hopes with early second-half pointed frees from O’Brien and Tomas Ryan. However, when Ryan’s penalty in the 49th minute was batted to safety by the three man De La Salle defensive wall it was effectively all over as a contest with the winners literally toying with their outclassed opponents in the closing quarter.

Scorers for De La Salle: J. Mullane(0-10, 0-8 frees, 0-2 “65s‘’); J. Dillon(0-4); E. Madigan(1- 0); P. Kennedy(1-0); J. Keane(0-2) D. Greene, P. Nevin, S, Daniels(0-1) each.
