Hamilton High School make history with first ever cup victory

Hamilton High School secured a first-ever Dr Harty Cup win as they beat Coláiste Chríost Rí in their Group C opener at Ballygarvan.

Having led six points in the first half and four in the second, the Bandon school looked to have blown their chances as goals kept the city side in contention, but injury-time points from Jerry O’Neill and Trevor Horgan earned them the win.

The ‘Hammies’ had moved 0-7 to 0-4 clear following O’Neill’s 23rd-minute point before Horgan burst clear of the Críost Rí defence and fire to the net for a six-point lead.

After a good Colm Keane point, however, Críost Rí then cut the gap to just two as Bandon full-back James Hurley was unlucky to divert a Callum Crowe sideline beyond goalkeeper David Lynch, and at half-time Hamilton led by 1-8 to 1-6.

Crowe’s goal early in the second-half, allied to good frees from Gerard O’Sullivan, had Coláiste Chríost Rí in front after 38 minutes, but five consecutive Hamilton points, two each from the impressive Michael Cahalane and Horgan as well as one by O’Neill, had them 1-15 to 2-9 in front before a Crowe free cut the gap to a goal.

Though Horgan missed a chance to put the game beyond Críost Rí, Cahalane extended the Bandon lead to four but then Brian Ramsey’s goal, from a Keane ball across, had just a point in it before Keane himself levelled.

Both sides wasted point chances as the end neared, but when it came to it O’Neill and Horgan were on target for Bandon, whose only previous appearance in the competition had been against Midleton CBS in 1993.

St Colman’s began with a win in Group A as they beat Coláistí Chiarraí 2-25 to 2-9 in Dromcollogher.

First-half goals from Colm Fenton and Ronan O’Regan had Colman’s in a good position and while they were cancelled out before half-time, the Fermoy school were always too strong, Alan Fenton and Shane Moroney each scoring four points while Shane Walsh got two.

St Flannan’s also enjoyed a big win as they saw off Gaelcholáiste Mhuire on a 2-25 to 1-5 scoreline in Bruff. Tadhg Lynch and Brian Guilfoyle got the goals for the 21-time champions as Bobby Duggan scored eight points and Stephen Ward got five. Clare minors David Conroy, Martin O’Leary and Aidan McGuane also impressed for Flannan’s. Seán Warren scored the Cork school’s goal.

In Group B, Harty debutants Coláistí Iar Luimní got off to a winning start as they beat Abbey CBS by 1-17 to 1-12 at Kilmallock. Damien Lacey scored 1-10 for the West Limerick combination, including the goal late in the first half which gave them a 1-6 to 0-7 interval lead, with Jamie Butler chipping in with three points.

Donal O’Dwyer got all but two points of Abbey’s total.
