Majestic Meadow inspires Curtis Cup victory

Stephanie Meadow was the heroine as Great Britain and Ireland regained the Curtis Cup — 16 years after last winning it at Killarney.

The 20-year-old Alabama University student from Royal Portrush clinched the crucial singles point that gave the hosts a dramatic 10½ to 9½ victory at Nairn in Scotland.

After losing all three foursomes on Friday morning things looked bleak for the hosts but Great Britain and Ireland stuck to their task and went into the final day of singles one point adrift (6½ to 5½).

Meadow, the 2006 Irish girls champion, was superb yesterday coming home in four under par to defeat Amy Anderson 4&2. It was Meadow’s third point of the contest from five matches — the same as achieved by English duo Kelly Tidy and Holly Clyburn.

Slieve Russell teenager Leona Maguire did not have the best of times and playing the anchor role yesterday she was overwhelmed 6&5 by Brooke Pancake who was the best of the Americans with 3½ points.

Maguire was three down after five holes and struggled thereafter.

Meanwhile Ladies Golf Union chiefs last night announced that Dun Laoghaire Golf Club will host the 2016 Curtis Cup.

The chief executive of the Ladies Golf Union, Shona Malcolm explained:

“Dun Laoghaire Golf Club submitted a very compelling bid for hosting the 2016 match.

“The quality of the course and top class facilities at Dun Laoghaire, coupled with the commitment and enthusiasm of the club’s team, convinced us that we were selecting a great venue.”

Dun Laoghaire Club President Derek Montgomery added: “This is a tremendous achievement for our club.We are determined to host a very successful event, and are confident that, with the support of our members, we can make it a truly memorable occasion.”
