Johnson’s title as unlucky McIlroy suffers bogey blues at last

There was a soggy end to Rory McIlroy’s bid for victory in Memphis but the US Open champion will begin his title defence on Thursday with confidence restored after ending a run of three missed cuts.

After an early exit from the Memorial Tournament, McIlroy had made a late decision to change his schedule and play the FedEx St Jude Classic and his return to form at TPC Southwind vindicated the call as he contended for 71 holes. The Irishman’s victory bid came undone at the 72nd which he double bogeyed after his tee shot found water with American Dustin Johnson claiming victory in just his second start since returning from a back injury.

Johnson finished birdie-birdie-par to win the last tournament before the US Open at nine under par following a closing round of 66, one shot clear of fellow American John Merrick, with compatriots Chad Campbell, Davis Love III and Ryan Palmer and Australian Nick O’Hern on seven under.

McIlroy’s six at the last gave him a closing 69, and sent him back to a tie for seventh, three shots back at six under par. With the field forced to start their final rounds early due to the possibility of inclement weather in Memphis, McIlroy began a shot off the pace set by Love, Merrick and O’Hern. He quickly joined the fray with three birdies on his front nine. There was another at the 11th to take him into the outright lead before McIlroy hit a speed bump with bogeys at the 12th and 14th.

There was another wobble at the 17th when the Holywood star strayed left off the tee but he made amends with a great recovery shot to 19 feet, from where he birdied to rejoin the lead with playing partner Chad Campbell and Johnson, playing in the group behind. Merrick made it a fourway tie as he birdied the par-five 16th having just missed his eagle putt for the outright lead but McIlroy’s great work at 17 was undone on the 18th tee as his three wood found water on the inside of the dogleg left. His disappointment was obvious as he dropped the offending club to the ground and Campbell was also in trouble as his tee shot on 18 crept into the lake on the way to a bogey.

Their travails were becoming academic, however. as Johnson took the outright lead at nine under with back to back birdies at 16 and 17. The American was forced to wait on the 18th tee as McIlroy and Campbell resolved their individual issues but his three-wood shot was inch perfect and he parred from there for victory.

Pádraig Harrington finished his final round on a negative as he took bogey at the 72nd having preceded McIlroy by finding water off the tee. That gave him a closing one-under 69, his round of four birdies and three bogeys leaving him four under in a tie for 13th, a position that should be treated as a positive as he heads to San Francisco.

Meanwhile, Lee Westwood flew to San Francisco today with high hopes of making it three European wins in a row at the US Open.

Westwood warmed up for his tilt at following Graeme McDowell and Rory McIlroy by storming to a five-stroke victory at the Nordea Masters in Sweden – his third win in the event in three different decades, his 22nd on the European Tour and his 40th worldwide.

“I’ll tee off on Thursday with a lot of confidence,” said the 39-year-old world number three, who will play the first two rounds at the Olympic Club with Luke Donald and Rory McIlroy, the only two players ahead of him on the rankings.
