Carty keeps Holywood flag flying

It wasn’t all doom and gloom for Holywood tyros yesterday.

As Rory McIlroy struggled around Royal Lytham & St. Annes, another Holywood sensation, Jessica Carty, captured the Irish Girls Close Championship at Waterford Golf Club yesterday.

Carty eagled the 15th and finished birdie, birdie to edge out Olivia Mehaffey (Royal County Down Ladies) in a thrilling finish at the 17th to win 2 and 1.

Mehaffey was two up after five holes but then Carty got into her stride and halved the deficit at the 10th before her opponent won the 11th with par. The 12th was halved in birdies before Carty took charge with an impressive finish.

Sarah Boden (Kilkeel) won the Pat Fletcher Plate trophy by 1 hole, defeating Chloe Weir (Shandon Park).

The Irish Team for next month’s Girls Home Internationals at Radyr Golf Club, Wales (August 7-9) was finalised after yesterday’s competition.
