Castletroy see off St Colman’s and top group

Castletroy College 2-09 St Colman’s, Fermoy 0-13
Limerick’s Castletroy College did just enough to come out the right side of this winner-takes-all final round Harty Cup contest.

A goal in each half helped the Limerick city side advance to the quarter-final in January and they do so as group winners by virtue of their win over Gaelcholaiste Mhuire AG earlier in the Munster Post Primary Schools senior A hurling championship. St Colman’s will rue their luck that saw a last-gasp effort for goal just crash wide of the post after a goalmouth scramble when Pádraig Hannon delivered a long range free into the square.

But, overall, the Fermoy outfit were overly reliant on free-taker Stephen Condon, who finished with nine points from frees.

Indeed three of their four points from play came in the opening five minutes.

Castletroy struck for their first goal in the 11th minute with Conor Nicholas giving his side a 1-4 to 0-4 lead, punishing hesitancy in the Cork defence.

But Condon frees had St Colmans 0-9 to 1-5 ahead at half-time.

Within 90 seconds of the resumption Barry Nash had the second Castletroy goal.

When Mark O’Dwyer and Andrew La Touche Cosgrave added points, the Limerick side were 2-7 to 0-9 clear with just four minutes of the half played.

Condon was to be the only Fermoy scorer of the half and three successive points reduced the margin to a point. A draw would have been sufficient for St Colman’s but Castletroy had the final say with a Lorcan Lyons free.
