Guiney goal puts Rockchapel in charge

Rockchapel 1-8 Mitchelstown 0-6
Rockchapel collected the Cork JAFL title after a hard-fought win over Mitchelstown in terrible conditions in Mallow yesterday.

The Avondhu side led by three points at the turn (0-6 to 0-3) but corner-forward Ian Guiney dragged Rockchapel back into the tie with his fisted goal on 40 minutes after great work from Liam Collins had been thwarted by Mitchelstown keeper Luke Hannah.

Guiney’s goal was a game changer and with Mitchelstown not scoring in the second half, the county champions took control of proceedings.

Rockchapel also had notable contributions from full-forward Seamus Hickey, centre-back Ken Collins, centre-forward Daniel Curtain corner-forward Liam Collins and second half substitute William Murphy.

Mitchelstown dominated the opening period with the aid of a gale but didn’t make the most of the elements and also had to deal with corner-forward Liam Keane leaving the pitch on 17 minutes with a serious looking knee injury.

Their midfield duo of Shane Beston and Shane Cahill dominated while half-backs Pa Molloy and Owen Burke sniffed out the majority of Rockchapel’s opening period advances,.

However, the second half was all about Rockchapel as they pulled away to seal a Munster semi final clash against either Kerry side Kenmare or Waterford’s Kilmacthomas.
