Club honours Ó Muircheartaigh

Ceann Sibéal Golf Club will host a weekend to honour the broadcasting achievements of one of its most famous members Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh.

The legendary GAA commentator has been a member for over 60 years and celebrates his President’s Day on July 1.

The club will host a 14-hole Open Scramble on Friday, June 29 followed by a four-person team event the next day.

The President’s Prize on July 1 will be an Open 18-hole stableford competition with special prizes for non-members.

Former sports greats from around Ireland will attend to pay tribute to Ó Muircheartaigh, who retired from RTÉ two years ago.

Monies raised from the weekend will go to the Society of St Vincent de Paul and to offset the cost ofessential work in the club.

Meanwhile, Tadhg Kennelly is lacing up the boots again but Kerrysupporters hoping he is returning to Ireland to help the Kingdom chart a course through the All-Ireland qualifiers will be disappointed.

There had been suggestions when the 30-year-old announced his retirement from the AFL last year, that Kennelly might make himself available to Kerry, just as he did so successfully when they last won the All-Ireland in 2009.

However, he took on a job as a development coach with the AFL, which required him to be based full-time in Australia.

Now he is returning to Aussie Rules, although not at an elite level, signing for Ovens and Murray Football League outfit Albury.

The only GAA recruit to win a premiership when Sydney Swans took the honours in 2005, Kennelly will play in the last five home-and-away games of the season as well as the Tigers’ matches in the finals’ series.

Albury co-coach Daniel Maher is certain the Irishman is an outstanding acquisition for the league’s champions as they chase a record fourth successive premiership. Maher said: “All the innuendo started early days, but with his commitments it was put on the back burner for a while and then we caught up with Tadhg over the weekend. He’s been very genuine all the way along and is here for the right reasons. He’ll be a great asset with his experience and obvious ability… it’s pretty exciting news for the club.”

Kennelly, expected to make his debut against Lavington at Lavington Oval on July 28, played 197 matches for Sydney between 2001 and 2011.
