Spillane urges Fitzmaurice to return to ‘the Kerry way’ for success

Kerry legend Pat Spillane has called on new Kingdom manager Eamonn Fitzmaurice to return to the county’s traditional playing style.

Spillane, a winner of eight All-Irelands, feels that Kerry failed in attempts to ape other styles.

“Over the last two years when Kerry couldn’t beat them at Kerry’s game, Kerry decided the approach to winning an All-Ireland was to adopt the Donegal style of football, the northern style of football and it wasn’t playing to Kerry’s strengths,” Spillane said, in Galway at a seminar in aid of the Alan Kerins’ African Projects charity.

“The game is called Gaelic football, ‘foot-ball’, which means propelling the ball using the foot and sadly in many occasions it is not being used at all.”

Meanwhile, Stephen O’Neill will again captain the Tyrone senior football side in 2013, having succeeded Brian Dooher in the role last year.

In weekend team news, Cork start with eight of those who began last August’s All-Ireland semi-final defeat to Galway in tomorrow’s Waterford Crystal Cup game with UCC at the Mardyke. Lorcán McLoughlin also started against the Tribesmen and is on the bench. Of those absent, Seán Óg Ó hAilpín has retired, Eoin Cadogan has opted to play football only and Brian Murphy has yet to make clear his intentions; Conor Lehane and Luke O’Farrell are playing with their colleges in the competition and Jamie Coughlan is injured. Michael Cussen starts at full forward.
