Monksland to bypass Punchestown Festival
By Nick Robson
Monksland is unlikely to run again this season with trainer Noel Meade inclined to bypass an appearance at the Punchestown Festival.
The six-year-old won the Christmas Hurdle at Leopardstown over Christmas and connections decided then to save him for the Ladbrokes World Hurdle at Cheltenham.
Unfortunately in the week leading up to the big meeting, Monksland met with a setback and Meade made the tough decision to rule him out of Cheltenham and it is now likely he is finished for the season.
“No, I don’t think we’re going to try to get there (Punchestown) with him,” said Meade.
“We had a word with the vet and decided it’s probably best if we gave it a miss.”
Texas Jack could still take his chance in the Powers Gold Cup at Fairyhouse, although Meade is toying with the idea of waiting for Punchestown instead.
Reve De Sivola could take on Solwhit and Quevega in the Ladbrokes World Series Hurdle at Punchestown on April 25.
Both Irish aces were successful at the Cheltenham Festival – Quevega winning the OLBG Mares’ Hurdle for an amazing fifth time and Solwhit returning to his best in the Ladbrokes World Hurdle.
Reve De Sivola was only fourth in the latter event.
The French Champion Hurdle at Auteuil in June would be another possible target for Reve De Sivola as long as the ground was suitable.
*Tomorrow’s meeting at Gowran Park is subject to an inspection at 8am today.
*The point to point meetings at Loughbrickland, Co Down tomorrow and Liscarroll, Co Cork on Sunday have been cancelled.
