Fontaine on the up

Thursday, February 18, 2010

QUISCOVER FONTAINE, the least experienced horse in the field, can land the nap in the Powerstown Chase at Clonmel this afternoon.

He has had just one run over fences, taking a moderate contest at Limerick last month.

The selection did the job nicely, however, jumping and travelling well, before shooting clear in the closing stages.

That was his initial outing of the campaign and this very smart ex-hurdler can be expected to improve a bundle.

He faces just five rivals and they all have something to prove. Both Bringbackthebiff and Whatuthink have struggled of late, Swift Counsel disappointed at Naas, the trip seems on the short side for Go Sandy Go, while Window Of Hope is returning from a long break.

Willie Mullins trains Quiscover Fontaine and also has prospects with Some Target and The Midnight Club.

Some Target makes his debut over jumps in the Demense Maiden Hurdle and should prove hard to beat.

He was beginning to look ordinary enough, until getting off the mark in a Limerick bumper 18 days ago.

The six-year-old beat Ballyburke by a comfortable length and three parts and the form got a big boost when Ballyburke cruised to victory at Navan on Sunday.

Two and a half miles is on the short side for The Midnight Club, but he still gets the vote in the Kilsheelan Beginners Chase.

He didn’t get the best of drives when third to Jagoes Mills at Thurles last time and, hopefully, more use will be made of him on this occasion.

The opening Clonmel Maiden Hurdle could go to Tim Doyle’s Frosted Grape, third behind hot-pot, Sounds Of Jupiter, and Ned Of The Hill at Limerick. Ned Of The Hill has since won at Fairyhouse.
