Clock puts stop to Lynch’s Tour class challenge in Wiesbaden
Lynch placed eighth, a result that dropped him to the same position on the GCT leaderboard. Cameron Hanley’s single time fault in round one with the stallion Antello Z was good enough to buy the Mayoman a place in the second round, where the pair put up six faults, while Cian O’Connor’s new ride Cooper found the step up in class a test, finishing the opening round on 17 faults.
The €94,000 top prize went to American Laura Kraut on Cedric, beating two-time champion Edwina Tops-Alexander and 17-year-old star Cevo Itot du Chateau by two-tenths of a second.
Earlier, Tipp rider Lynch led an Irish one-two in the 1.40m Youngster Cup, crossing the finish line on Anyway II almost two seconds faster than Hanley on Amira.
At the nations cup show in La Baule, France, Cork’s Shane Sweetnam was best of the Irish in the €200,000 grand prix, taking ninth place with Amaretto D’Arco. His four faults in the first round was good enough to put him into the 11-horse decider, where he repeated the score, as France’s Patrice Delaveau powered to victory on Orient Express.
Earlier yesterday, US-based Sweetnam won a speed class, the stallion Cyklon giving him almost three seconds to spare over his nearest challenger.
On Saturday, Tipperary’s Shane Breen rode the mare Ominerale Courcelle to third place in the derby at the French fixture, finishing with four faults in the €45,000 one-round class that saw Delaveau, this time on Ornella Mail, provide the faster of the competition’s two clear rounds.
In Cavan, Peter Smyth claimed yesterday’s TRM/Horseware National Grand Prix class on Victoria Rose.
In the North, Meath’s Alexander Butler saw off a strong British challenge with Will Wimble to pocket €8,000 for his victory in the Balmoral Grand Prix on Friday night.
In eventing, Cork-based Limerickman Michael Ryan rode Ballylynch Wizard to third place in the one-star competition at Rockingham in England.
