Harbouring thoughts of dream catch? Be canny, take a look at The Cranny

Trish Dromey finds a Fountainstown beach home on the rocks

There probably aren’t any other properties at Fountainstown Beach in Cork which are as close to the water as The Cranny. The small 1950s bungalow is quite remarkable because of its location above a tidal sand bar and because of the amazing views across Cork’s harbour mouth, Ringabella Bay and the Westwood estuary.

It may have originally been built as a holiday property, but the 750 sq ft property has been owner-occupied by the same family for many years. Upgraded over time, it has been fitted with double glazed windows as well as a satellite dish and receiver for broadband. In recent years it’s also been re-roofed and the owners have also reinforced the retaining wall underneath the property.

The house has a front garden like no other: it’s a long railed balcony which is directly above the sea and has a ramp leading down to the rocky shoreline.

Inside the bungalow there’s a long narrow kitchenette with modern fitted units, and appliances as well as a large L shaped sitting dining room with patio doors and a breakfast counter. There’s also a shower room and two bedrooms including one en suite. Selling agent Roy Dennehy says he’s had good interest in the unusual property which is located six miles from Carrigaline, particularly from young couples, single people and downsizing couples

VERDICT: Perfect for someone who hates gardening and loves the sea.Home
