Tuck Mill a real looker in quiet part of West Cork

An old mill complex is now an eye-catching four-bedroom property with pond, reports Tommy Barker

West Cork’s Tuck Mill has what’s described as ‘kerb appeal’ — only this rural place is off very quiet roads, effectively kerb-free. Yet, it’s a looker.

An eye-catching mix of property done up by a serial house renovator, the old mill complex is decidedly residential, with a four-bed house, added to by an old stone studio building, as well as a lofted timber clad garage, and it all looks down the folds in the landscape (well, 0.7 of an acre) to a pond, fed by the original mill stream which was coerced to swell to pond-size. Elevated viewing balconies and seating areas have been carefully sited to get those niche views.

Auctioneer Ernest Forde of Hodnett Forde says the setting is a couple of miles north of Rossmore, and eight miles from Clonakilty and the coast. “It’s off a quiet boreen, almost unseen to the rest of the world but not isolated,” comments Mr Forde, expecting UK interest in the mill..

The main house, dating to about 1900, is well-finished, with upgraded insulation and has a stove in one living room, with beamed ceiling, and an open fire in another 22’ by 12’ room, and has four upper level bedrooms, one of them en suite. There’s also a utility, and country style kitchen, and the main family bathroom has a Jacuzzi bath.

Outside, there’s a workshop/garage with overhead office/store, plus a stone-built studio which has an external viewing balcony, main open room inside and semi-basement storage.

VERDICT: Not run of the mill.
