Tinakilly House hotel has unusual, transatlantic links

A Wicklow house with links to the first ‘world wide web’ — a trans-ocean cable — is for sale on 186 acres, for €3m.

Famed country house hotel, Tinakilly House, is being offered for sale via receivers, Ernst and Young. Fifty-eight of its acres are being zoned for house development.

Located near Rathnew, and with conference facilities for 100, as well as 51 bedrooms, Tinakilly is being offered via agents, CBRE, in lots or as an entire.

It was built as a private residence for a Captain Robert Halpin, who was the commander of The Great Eastern when it laid the transoceanic telegraph cable between Ireland and Canada in 1866, and he’s reputed to have been given an open cheque by the British government to build Tinakilly, as a thank-you for improving world communications, 19th-century-style.

Tinakilly House is close to the M11/N11, which links Dublin to Wexford and Rosslare Harbour, and has coastal frontage on its eastern boundary.

The Co Wicklow hotel is on 14.5 acres, with the rest of the land having a variety of zonings, including residential, hotel and leisure, open-space and conservation-area.
