A grand apartment to call home in Crosshaven

Fancy a grand apartment? Look no further than 6, The Grand, a ground floor, 1,400 sq ft apartment, in a former Victorian harbour hotel with links to the rich and the famous.

Up for sale with a €350,000 asking price is a ground-floor, two-bed apartment tucked into a corner of this 1880s-built seaside hotel in the heart of Crosshaven, Cork harbour.

It overlooks the Royal Cork Yacht Club (RCYC) from the comfort of its deep bay window, and is one of 12 apartments undertaken in its renewal by the O’Connor family in the early to mid 2000s, after the hotel’s trading days had ended, and after it had turned to office use for a period.

A previous hotel owner had been Denis Doyle, of stevedoring and Moonduster sailing fame, and the Doyle family also owned Crosshaven’s boatyard, now currently up for sale.

Other owners of The Grand included the Hayes family, who gave land in front of the hotel to allow the 1720-founded RCYC transfer to Crosshaven from Cobh in 1966, and among those who worked there was Bob Geldof’s mother and father, with Robert Geldof managing it for period.

Ever before that, Bob Geldof’s grandfather, the Belgian-born Zenon Geldof also worked at The Grand, almost a century ago, as chef and manager, from 1919 to 1921, arriving from a spell in the Hydro in Blarney, and he later managed a team of eight French chefs at the Plaza Restaurant in Dublin, as well as working on the Cunard Line and the Queen Mary.

Finery still prevails at 6, The Grand, where estate agent Michael Pigott says the two-bed ground floor apartment “has a very high-spec fit out, with an impressive layout and a palatial sitting room.” Proportions of the original nine-bay hotel were laid out day one, in 1887, by architect James McMullen and its exterior has changed little over almost a century and a half. It has lost a glazed, central entrance porch, two floors below its distinctive pyramidical central roof tower, and gained some steel balconies for overhead apartments.

Thanks to a ground floor setting, No 6 has a front external seating area by the window bay, overlooking the yacht club’s marina and upriver along the Owenabue towards Drake’s Pool, and it also has access to a private rear patio/courtyard, albeit a bit overlooked by an elevated rear bridge entrance to The Grand’s upper floor apartments.

Internally, No 6 has a hall, with high-ceilinged 24’ by 15’ living room with fireplace/surround, and access through double doors to a kitchen/dining room, with front patio access and there’s another fireplace, but main heating is electric.

There are two en suite bedrooms, one with bath and a shower, the other with shower, and each bedroom has access to the rear patio, which has side gate access.

VERDICT: A Grand place indeed from which to watch over the RCYC’s 300th year anniversary in 2020.
