Standing up against household tax

Having been kept away during the referendum campaign, and having recently enjoyed almost a week-long break in a luxurious Rio hotel at our expense, the Minister for Austerity Taxes, Phil Hogan, is once again trying to bully the many septic tank charge boycotters.

This time he is planning a campaign of sending out reminder letters, in the hope of panicking and intimidating us into registering for all his new taxes.

The opposition to these taxes has been a successful “peoples campaign” where over 50% of the people due to register are still boycotting the charges. This campaign has shown the resilience and determination of “people power” against injustice.

Despite all the media propaganda, latest revelations show the government’s ‘figures’ for registration are misleading. Over one third of the houses registered are owned by landlords etc registering multiple houses. In fact, 52% of people due to register are still boycotting the charge — 760,000 homes, representing over 1.5m people.

Local authorities have no direction as yet as to how they are to send out demand letters to homeowners who have boycotted the charges thus far, despite Government statements that it will happen, as they have not got databases to link names with addresses and properties. They have not even yet sent out the promised information leaflets on the charges to households. There is a strong possibility that people who have already paid may even get demand letters too, whenever they may come out.

The policy of the Government at the moment is to try and intimidate more people into voluntarily registering, in the hope that the people will jump and make it easier for the Government to collect the charge so that they can beat the people with their own stick.

The Citizens Against Charges group, along with other groups, is determined to continue to oppose these unjust charges, but at the end of the day it is up to the people to decide what direction they wish to take. However, we the Citizens Against Charges, have not told, and are not telling the people, not to pay. The power to make the Government’s campaign unworkable and unenforceable is in the hands of the people by standing up to these threats. We contend that there would be no issue with these charges if we were getting value for money in the way of services in return.

If we stand united, they can’t bring us all to court, and we can make this tax uncollectable. If, on the other hand, we register for this, where will it end?
