Prostitution brings only human misery
As one of over 50 organisations which form the Turn Off the Red Light campaign, we are seeking a change in the law and have been greatly encouraged by recent political statements of support, including that of Cllr Noel Collins, conveyed through your Letters page.
A review of the laws on prostitution is now underway and we are asking members of the public and public representatives to make their views known. Our campaign is asking all local authorities to pass motions supporting the calls for a change in the law and an end to the human rights abuses taking place in communities right across Ireland.
We believe the only way to end the threats, abuse and violence being carried out against women is to cut off supply.
In addition to seeking political support, we are inviting members of the public to follow the Turn Off the Red Light campaign on Facebook. There we will provide campaign updates and show ways your support can help shut down a trade which profits solely from the misery of others.
These are difficult times for families and individuals, as many struggle to make ends meet. However, our current economic problems should not be used as an excuse to turn a blind eye to human rights abuses on our doorstep.
If anyone has any doubt about this debate I would invite them to read your investigation again.
