WHEN the pro-Lisbon fraternity were demanding that the people change their previous No vote to a Yes vote for the Lisbon Treaty, they didn’t tell the people that the post-treaty EU would be run not in the interests of people but in the interests of the capitalist market.
Yet this is exactly what has happened.
Defending the market first demanded that local authorities be forced by the European Court to charge VAT on all services they provide.
Now the interests of the market have demanded that the EU make it illegal to set a minimum price for cigarettes – a move designed to prevent young people especially from taking up the bad habit. So now we know where we stand with this neoliberal, capitalist-worshipping EU: the interests of the free market are placed above all other things, including the health of the people.
I wonder what horrors are going to come from the EU next?
