Cork’s architectural gems threatened

Jeremy Williams in his masterful Companion Guide to Architecture in Ireland refers to the ‘Lhasa-like’ tiered effect created by Robert Ashlin’s Good Shepherd Convent and other institutions located on the prominent Cork City hillside.

The architectural wonders of the old Tibetan capital are still intact.

Alas, Cork’s built heritage is gradually crumbling and disappearing in the wake of developer acquisitions and indifferent local and national authorities.

The city’s south-side equivalent in role and style, the industrial school at Greenmount, also disappeared in the 1990s without a shred of effective protection or salvage.

How long now for State-owned St Kevin’s Hospital, or the still-derelict half of Our Lady’s?
