McAreavey images - A cruel and callous move

The publication of photographs of the body of Michaela McAreavey in the hotel room where she was murdered is a shocking development and the latest in a series of appalling events surrounding her tragic and untimely death.

The editorial decision to print 12 graphic black and white images of the scene in yesterday’s edition of the Mauritian newspaper Sunday Times has to a serious degree undermined any prospect of bringing her killer or killers to justice.

Adding to the grief of her husband John and the McAreavey and Harte families, the photographs include close-up pictures of Mrs McAreavey’s injuries as she lay in the hotel suite where she was killed on her honeymoon.

By every editorial standard, the latest episode plumbs new depths, dealing a further blow to families who were treated appallingly during the eight-week trial in which two men were found innocent and acquitted.

By labelling as “Exclusive” the images leaked by unknown sources, having been used in evidence by the police, the Mauritian newspaper has perpetuated the scandalous attitude illustrated by a defence lawyer during the trial who callously sought to cast suspicion on Mr McAreavey.

Taoiseach Enda Kenny speaks for the entire country in condemning publication of the photographs as a reprehensible act and a gross affront to human dignity. He can be assured of popular support for his decision to lodge a formal complaint “in the strongest possible terms” with the government of Mauritius.

A deep sense of public abhorrence is poignantly reflected in a statement issued by two families struggling to come to terms with the outcome of the trial.

As they said, the action by the newspaper was “not only insensitive to their grief but marks another low in the treatment of John, the two families, and the dignity of Michaela”.Home
