Politicians should reply to constituents

Friday, February 17, 2012

"Proposal to filter emails to TDs" reads your amazing Feb 13 headline.

As a citizen who has written to local TDs, Senators and MEPs regarding the decision to close our embassy to the Vatican, I was not surprised at your report.

I have written several times to my South Kerry national and international paid representatives on several other straight forward issues.

With the notable exceptions of Michael Healy-Rae TD, Senator Paul Coughlan and Sean Kelly MEP, the others have deplorable records in respect of replies.

When I contacted one TD’s office I was told that he was computer illiterate.

Yet the same TD had a laptop provided to him when he was a county councillor.

What our unwilling representatives don’t seem to realise is that just like ordinary mail, their secretaries can deal with most of their emails.

In many cases surely a simple acknowledgement such as "your views have been noted" would be sufficient.
