The period between Christmas and New Year is fast becoming peak season Ciara McDonnell has the best options abroad for a Twixmas break – so you can start planning for next year.
For lots of us, that time between Christmas and New Year is a time to take a break from the festivities and recharge before heading into the New Year celebrations. But increasingly people are using these days to jet off on a low-cost holiday.
It might be too last minute to travel next week, but here’s a chance to check out your options for next year.

If you want guaranteed sun straight after Christmas, then Tenerife is always a good bet. Loveholidays.ie fly from Cork to the Sol Tenerife in Playa de las Americas. The four-star Sol Tenerife lies three minute’s walk from the beach, views of which can be enjoyed from the pool bar. The rooms are all air conditioned with satellite television and ample sized bathrooms, which is a rarity to be cherished. Catering really well to families, the hotel has well-appointed family rooms and is located really near a waterpark if you’re up for a day trip.
Sunsearch.ie are travelling to the all-inclusive Granada Park this Twixmas. The three-star resort is quiet and very friendly and offers value for money in a clean and relaxed environment. This resort is not necessarily for young children; it lacks entertainment that some families require on holiday, but if you are looking for a no frills space that is near beaches and shopping, then this is a fantastic option. If all-inclusive becomes too much, there are lots of restaurants nearby, and a mini market on site for those in-room essentials.
Lovely Lanzarote offers sun-soaked respite from too much turkey after Christmas, and TUI have a holiday staying at the super modern Be Live Experience resort on the Costa Teguise, which will offer a balm to the soul of those who have festive overload. This all-inclusive resort has all the bells and whistles one would expect, with rooms boasting tea and coffee making facilities and slippers in an airy interior. If you’re travelling as a family, their family rooms are fantastic and have a kitchenette for emergency snack attacks.
Sunsearch holidays are staying at the Vik Hotel San Antonio in Puerto del Carmen after Christmas, and this four-star hotel is ideal for families. Not only is it steps away from the beach, but it has a children’s pool and playground on site. The rooms are spacious and it is well worth requesting a sea view; it will make your holiday. This holiday is half board and all meals are served buffet style in the main restaurant.
In my opinion, Sunway cannot be beaten when it comes to Twixmas deals to Gran Canaria this year. They are flying to the Gloria Palace Amadores Hotel in Puerto Rico on December 30. This thalassotherapy hotel is renowned throughout the Canary Islands as a destination for relaxation. It’s 500 metres from the beach and rooms have wifi and tea and coffee making facilities, but the real gem here is the thalassotherapy suite, which is adults only and super amazing.
Sunway are also travelling to the Abora Catarina Hotel by Lopesan, which has just received a mega-swish upgrade, in time for the winter season. Overlooking the spectacular dunes of Maspalomas, the rooms are newly decorated and spacious, with decent balconies and tea and coffee making facilities. The resort is a five-minute taxi drive to lots of restaurants and shops, so if you need to get away from all-inclusive living for a few hours, then it’s no hardship.
Costa Del Sol
Después de tres días y con mi valija pérdida por ahí, llegué a la Caleta de Vélez, España ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ En la casa de mis suegros me esperaron con mucho amor y comida. With temperatures in the late teens during December, the Costa Del Sol offers a winter climate not unlike a good old Irish summer, which makes it a very easy holiday choice for many. Sunsearch.ie are staying at the Perla Marina Hotel in Nerja on December 29, and it has an ideal seafront location for families who want to take an ocean dip.
Tui is heading to a beachside location too, at the Hotel Florida in Fuengirola. This hotel has a great pool and is just minutes from the beach and harbour, as well as all the eateries and nightlife the area are known for. Depart Cork on December 28 for 7 nights at the Hotel Florida on a half board basis from €999pp.
If snow is on the agenda, then there is still time to hit the slopes before New Year. Topflight are heading to the Gasthaus Bichler in Söll for a week on December 30. This super cosy hotel is great value for money and is located just seven minute’s walk from the bustling town centre. All rooms are spacious and ensuite and there are lots of homely common areas to relax post or pre-piste. Be sure to take advantage of the stunning balcony, which affords otherworldly views.
Direct Ski is heading to the Knunbauer apartments in Mayrhofen on December 30. This hotel is a brilliant family base, located just 50 metres from the resort centre and a ski bus stop just outside the door. The apartments have decent sized bedrooms and seating areas and the fully equipped kitchens make it easy to whip up a post-ski meal in no time.
