Leaving Posh behind, Victoria hits Dublin

Style icon and fashion designer Victoria Beckham visited Brown Thomas’s flagship store on Grafton St yesterday for an exclusive fashion presentation for customers.

Leaving Posh behind, Victoria hits Dublin

It was Victoria’s first visit to Dublin to promote her two womenswear collections, Victoria Beckham and Victoria, Victoria Beckham, which are carried exclusively by the store in Ireland. Proceedings were hosted by fashion director, Shelley Corkery whose partnership with the brand is in its seventh season.

Defying recessionary gloom, Irish customers raced to pre-order her famous four-figure frocks — a loyalty which has bought the former Spice Girl to Dublin to connect with her customers.

Wearing a linear structured wool black coat from her own collection with trademark black stilettos and a messy updo, Mrs Beckham looked every inch the style star/working mother with one-year-old Harper in tow. With two ready-to-wear fashion lines on the go, not to mention denim, eyewear, accessories, and an optical collection in the works, what motivates her?

“I do what I do because I love women and I want to empower them. For me, to meet them and help them while they’re trying on clothes, it’s very important. I want the feedback.”

Clearly this woman has been listening. Since winning over the fashion critics in 2008 with her 10-piece debut dress collection, the Essex girl has gone to great lengths to prove she’s more than just a one-trick wannabe. Couture details such as double-ended zippers, inside corsets and grosgrain waistbands and luxury fabrics quickly became part of her streamlined signature, resonating with red carpet regulars like Cameron Diaz, Jennifer Lopez, and Kate Winslet. As for the secret to the brand’s success? “I always like to have that signature side to my collection, because I want my customer to be able to rely on me from season to season and go and get what she wants.”

For autumn/winter 2012, this trademark is clear. Fitted double crepe knee-length dresses rendered in rib sleeve, polo stripes and V-neck and three-quarter sleeve styles commandeered the mainline collection with brass-buttoned boyfriend and zip collar raglan coats in structured wool.

The Victoria, Victoria Beckham line similarly retains its characteristic whimsy with drop waists and soft pleating offset by strong, conversational prints and sophisticated woven jacquards.

Of the newer Victoria, Victoria Beckham label which launched last season, she says: “I wanted to give my existing customer plus another younger customer a designed clothing line at a slightly more affordable price. It’s the other side to my personality. Contrary to rumours, I do have a fun side to me. I’d say this collection is channelling my inner girl if you like.”

This, as she attests, is more than just a job.

“It’s my passion; it’s what I love to do.”

And yes, she smiled.
