DIY: Q&A

Q: How may recessed lights do I need to light my hallway? I don’t want to put in more than I need.

A. Well, it’s about watts and there is a trade formula many designers use. (L’ x W’) x 1.5 to get the wattage for the space. So, if your hall is four feet wide and 12 feet long, you’ll need 70W-plus to light the area successfully, or three to four 20W fixtures.

Q. How can I be sure I’m buying an old lead crystal chandelier and not a plastic one or a plain glass? I see a lot of them for sale second hand and at auction sales.

A. Lead crystal has what is termed a high ‘refractive index’ and splits and reflects white light in that signature rainbow of colour. If you can handle the piece, glass will be cold and lead crystal will be heavier than expected and set on a very robust frame. Get a receipt stating that the piece is lead crystal if you are in doubt and want a guarantee.

Q. I saw pendant light spun out of what seemed to be wood, and can’t source it now. Any ideas?

A. The work of Tom Raffield springs to mind as he offers a number of matted looking fixtures in ribbons of various wood. Prices start at a round £235 plus delivery for his Pendant No.1, which is winner of several lighting awards.www.tomraffield.com
