The motherload of Mother's Day gift ideas

Esther N McCarthy picks out perfect presents for all the deserving mothers out there, from handmade Atlantic seaweed body butter to supersonic hairdryers and fabulous floral jewellery.

Mothering Sunday is March 26, get the breakfast tray out, flowers at the ready and the homemade cards signed. But what’s the one present every mother wants - no matter what age her little darlings are - that money just can’t buy? Peace and quiet.

“I just want no fighting today, just give me a bit of peace.” Sound familiar?

Well, I’ll let you in on a little secret, she wants peace AND a pressie, a bit of spoiling for all she’s done for the family. Like you know, creating life and all. Allow me to present some gifts ideas that should suit all the different types of mammies out there.

Ideally, just leave the pressie on the breakfast tray and then get the feck out of the house for a couple of hours. Happy Mother’s Day!

Tea for two

All the lovely hotels in the land will be putting on a spread for Mother’s Day. See what your mum’s favourite spot is offering. Afternoon tea is a lovely indulgence and a nice way to spend a bit of time with each other.

Cream dream

If mum is a fan of a little tipple in the evening, this might tickle her fancy. The Avondhu Liqueur Company has launched Cremor Irish Cream. It’s made in Cork, using locally-sourced ingredients, so it must be massive altogether. Make her an Irish coffee with a twist.

It’s stocked in selected SuperValu and Centra stores nationwide, €19.99 a bottle.

It’s a wrap

River Island have some gorgeous new additions in store at the moment, lots to make any mammy look gorgeous. I love this black corsage skinny scarf, I also spotted it in coral.

Wake up and smell the roses

Mum will love this cute trio of rose face cream, handcream, and mandarin and chamomile lip balm, all made with Atlantic Irish Seaweed. Fiona Burke makes all of these herself in her wooden chalet workshop in the Boggeragh Mountains, Co. Cork.

The seaweed is one of the key ingredients in all her products, as well as organic oils, cocoa butter, unbleached West Cork beeswax, organic flower waters, and essential oils. Gorgeous.

€48, www.littlered.ie

Picture perfect

This is a lovely idea for a present, a painting of the kids shoes - and maybe mammy and daddy’s in there too. Karin Smyth is a Cork artist who began painting baby shoes when her first grandchild was born in 2008.

Each painting is an original and can be commissioned starting from €65. www.babycraftbykarin.com

Natural nuturing

Print and be damned

If your mum is the chic sort, you can’t go far wrong with these fabulous trousers from Penneys.

€16 and there’s a matching jacket too for €23, if you want to go all out. You know by the time you get to the till you’ll have €243 worth of stuff anyway. At least, that’s what happened me last Saturday. I only went in for a pack of hair bobbles.

Luscious locks

If bad hair days are a problem for a busy mammy, have a think about investing in a Dyson supersonic hair dryer, €399 from Harvey Norman.
