Stave off bad hair daze

THERE is one word for my summer hair: crispy. I am currently rocking a Mick Wallace special, and that’s not through choice.

There’s something about summer that makes my hair look like something you’d stuff cheap couches with. The ends are insanely dry, the colour is bizarre and it has reached unprecedented levels of frizz. Right now I need all the help I can get.

First off, protection. My cheap solution is a hat. But if you’re a non-hat person, then you might want to check out a few sun protectors. Kérastase is king of sun protection products - and even though the range is quite expensive, it’s probably the most effective on the market. It battles sun, sea and chlorine so it’s a got a triple whammy that should cover all holiday hair eventualities. If you’ve got frizzy locks, then try the Kérastase Soleil Huile Celeste, €20.93, which protects against UVA and UVB and also works as a pretty nifty styling product on wet hair. It should be all you need if you’re off somewhere sunny.

UV rays can accelerate colour-fade, which can be a real pain considering how expensive it is to get your hair coloured. It’s a good idea to invest in a colour protect shampoo and conditioner, as it will pay dividends over time and lengthen your tone. Other shampoos can temporarily re-invigorate your colour (John Frieda’s Blonde and Brunettte range), but for colour maintenance try Aussie’s Colour Mate Shampoo and Conditioner, €6.99, effective and not too expensive. Also, check out L’Oreal’s Professional’s Inoa Colour Care Shampoo and conditioner. The shampoo is luxuriously foaming, while the conditioner only needs minutes to work.

I’m a big believer in masques for the hair. They work very well once a week or so, and you don’t have to spend a fortune. You can pick up a small masque sachet in pharmacies, but if you want to splash out then there are loads of products to choose from.

Bumble & Bumble Deep Treatment, €28.39, is designed to work on chemically treated and overstressed hair. It does require a bit of effort - 20
