As the weather turns cold our skin can really suffer. It’s time to lather on an intensely moisturising skincare cream to offset the harsh, dehydrating effect.
There are a few new intensely moisturising skincare creams on the market and not a second too soon as the weather has taken a turn for the Baltic.
One that I have been really impressed with is Origins’ Make A Difference Plus + Ultra-Rich Rejuvenating Cream (€42.50). This is truly one of the richest face creams I have ever used. It sinks into the skin and leaves it feeling moist and plump all day. This may not look like much — Origins don’t go in for the prettifying of products that other brands might, but boy does it work. If you have dehydrated skin, you will feel your face quite literally sucking this product in. It contains a lychee and watermelon complex that rehydrates skin at a deep level.
The other really intense face cream that works miracles is Clinique’s Moisture Surge Intense Skin Fortifying Hydrator (€45.50). I don’t like how this product smells (Clinique don’t perfume their products) but it is a small price to pay for something that will keep your skin in top condition through the winter months, as it actually strengthens the skin’s moisture barrier.
The cold is usually the core issue in winter, and the one that leads to all the other corollary problems like dryness, redness, chapping, etc.
Dr David Orentreich, is Clinique’s guiding dermatologist and says the change in temperature throws the skin’s balance off. “Certain mechanisms just don’t work properly anymore — cells don’t turn over at the same rate, leading to flakiness and dullness. If it’s cold and dry, the air around you can suck the moisture out of your skin. Wind further dehydrates the skin and can cause it to chafe and crack.”
Ageing also becomes a concern in the cold, as skin becomes papery. I find the formulated chemist-stocked brands like Vichy and La Roche Posay really target problems caused by cold weather. Vichy’s Liftactiv Derm Source products are perfect for this particular concern. Try Liftactiv Derm Source Day (€31) and for an extra boost try Liftactiv Serum 10 (€34) with 10% concentration of Rhamnose (proven to improve skin rejuvenation).
