Smurfit: I was inches from death in taxi shooting

Actress Victoria Smurfit has recalled how she came within inches of death when a gunman opened fire on a taxi she was travelling in while holidaying in South Africa.

In the wake of the Oscar Pistorius case the 38-year-old, who has just landed a leading role in a new US drama series Dracula, took to Twitter yesterday to speak about the day when a bullet whizzed past her face in a cab in Cape Town.

After the incident her family were told that a South Africa gang has declared a Kill A Tourist day on New Year’s Eve 2009 when the actress and her husband Doug Baxter along with her mum, her brother Dermot and his wife Charlie were travelling in a taxi.

The actress, who is now based in Hollywood, went on Twitter yesterday to recall her near-death experience.

“My family and I were shot at in Cape Town on NYE a while back. Bullet went from back window 2 front, missing everyone. Miraculous. we were in a taxi.. with a balloon. Random,” she tweeted.

The mother-of-three tweeted after her pal Piers Morgan asked a general question on Twitter on gun crime in South Africa in the wake of the murder of girlfriend of Olympic star Oscar Pistorius which has shocked the world.

“Wonderful country, but big gun crime problem > RT @littleMster:@piersmorgan Have you ever been to South Africa???”, tweeted US TV anchor Piers Morgan.

The vocal anti-gun campaigner was suitably shocked by the reply by his friend Victoria Smurfit who regularly engages with him on the social net6work site.

“@VictoriaSmurfit terrifying!”, he tweeted.

Victoria Smurfit and her family were travelling through Cape Town on their way to a party just minutes before 2010 was rung in when the terrifying incident happened.

She spoke afterwards of her amazement that none of the family had been hit by the bullet which blew past her in the front seat before exiting barely half an inch from the head of her sister-in-law Charlie in the back seat.

The former Ballykissangel star has been living in Los Angeles for the past two years with her publishing executive husband and their three children, Evie, 8, Ridley, 5, and Flynn, 4, to pursue her Hollywood dream.

She has just been signed up to play Lady Jane in NBC new 10-episode series, Dracula, alongside Jonathan Rhys Myers as the count.
