The teenage son of restaurateurs Sallyanne and Derry Clarke has died following a tragic accident at home.
Andrew Clarke, 16, was working underneath a car on the driveway at the family home when it collapsed on him and critically injured the teenager.
The family have revealed that a number of his organs have been donated for life-saving transplants.
The boy, a student at Clongowes College, was car-mad and often attended race meetings with his father, the Michelin Star-winning chef who runs the L’Ecrivain restaurant on Dublin’s Baggot St.
The incident happened last Thursday, and Andrew was discovered by his mother Sallyanne when she returned to the family home at Crooksling in the foot of the Dublin Mountains.
After she called emer-gency services and he was taken to hospital, his parents were told he was in a coma and had little hope of surviving due to his massive injuries.
The couple, and Andrew’s sister Sarah May, 22, are said to be devastated.
Sallyanne Clarke last night said: “Our darling, wonderful son Andrew has passed on. We are very proud to say that Andrew is donating his heart, lungs and liver, and both kidneys to help others.
“We would like to thank everybody for all their prayers and support through this difficult time. Funeral details will be announced at a later date.”
A family friend said: “They are all totally devastated and distraught following this awful accident.
“Sallyanne was totally devoted on Andrew and spoiled him since he was a child. Words cannot convey how they all feel. Sarah May had been due to go to Australia for a year out, but we don’t know if this is going to happen now. Her parents are obviously going to need her support more than ever.”
Only two months ago, Sarah May Clarke qualified with a degree in event management and had been working at front of house in L’Ecrivain up until she was due to depart for Australia.
This year L’Ecrivain celebrated 23 years in business, while Sallyanne Clarke celebrated her 50th birthday.
