A WEST Cork town is planning to beat the budget blues next week by “eating cake” — Marie Antoinette-style.
As Finance Minister Michael Noonan delivers one of the toughest budgets in the history of the state next Tuesday, Skibbereen’s cafe and restaurant owners will take to the streets to hand out free cakes.More than 20 businesses will offer 10% discounts on all purchases made between 3pm and 6pm.
There will be free talks in the Town Hall from 3pm on a range of inspirational and feel-good topics. The event will finish at 6pm with a performance from West Cork Pipes and Drums before several bars host live music.
Acupuncturist Anne Crossey said she came up with the idea after hearing so many of her clients speak fearfully about the budget.
Backed by Skibbereen Business Association, she said she hopes the ‘Let Them Eat Cake’ day will banish the negativity.
“This is a day for everyone to come into town, have a piece of cake, listen to some new ideas, get a few bargains in the shops and for one day forget the economy, forget the budget and forget the politicians.
“Let Them Eat Cake is about family, community and fun. It’s been great fun to organise and it’s going to be a great fun day,” she said.
Sean Murray, chairperson of Skibbereen Business Association, said: “Undoubtedly there are more tough times ahead but if we work together then we have the power to change things for the better.” Home
