Kenny: ‘Strong opinions’ on abortion in Fine Gael

The Taoiseach said “strong opinions” on abortion are to be expected as a number of Fine Gael TDs promised to resist moves to liberalise laws.

Enda Kenny said the Coalition was “clearly in accordance with the commitment in the Programme for Government” by setting up an expert committee to examine the issue.

It will report to the Minister for Health, James Reilly, by the end of September on last year’s ruling by the European Court of Human Rights that the rights of a woman with cancer, who had to travel out of Ireland for an abortion, had been violated.

Mr Reilly promised backbench TDs that he would discuss the findings of the report with them before going to cabinet. He was responding to Fine Gael TDs and senators who spoke out against liberalising abortion laws during a parliamentary party meeting on Wednesday night.
