More than 150,000 people are expected to throng the Christmas markets on Cork’s Grand Parade and visit festively decorated Bishop Lucey Park before Santa pops down the chimney.
The markets officially opened last night and a Cork City Council spokesman said that following on their success last year this season they are extending their opening times to include the entire week leading up to and including Sunday, Dec 23.
The markets, which include a variety of artisan food producers and crafts, will open at weekends from 8am-10pm and then every day from Dec 13-23.
Lord Mayor Cllr John Buttimer said the Cork Christmas celebrations had been growing bigger and better each year.
“With the markets’ opening hours being extended once again we hope everyone will have the opportunity to come in and experience the magic Cork City has to offer at Christmas,” said Mr Buttimer.
Bishop Lucey Park will once again become a glittering winter wonderland. It will open from 4pm to 8pm across the four weekends leading up to Christmas.
This year’s theme is inspired by The Nutcracker, so don’t miss the chance to bring the kids along to meet the Sugarplum Fairy.
Some of this year’s highlights will include charity performances by choirs, a full-size vintage carousel and helter skelter, children’s workshops and free family entertainment on the outdoor stage.
Also, for the first time, the market will include a dedicated Gluhwein Bar.
The food stalls which will feature in the market this year include Wok n’ Roll, O’Flynns Gourmet Sausage Co, Bitesize Ltd, The Crepe Man, Rebel Burger, Barracuda BBQ Company, Hammami Kebabs, Pompeii Pizza, Hans Frankenfurter, Fire & Food Restaurants, 360 Catering, Choc-Amore, Cork Coffee Roasters, Cameron Macaroonry, Canard Souvage, Crazy Nuts, Natasha’s Living Food, Glenilen and Candy Rock Lane.
The retail and craft stalls this year include Stella Stars, Hammockology, Wacky Hat Shop, Gamalan Balinese Handicrafts, Edel, Indigo Craft, Provencail, Feargal Dunne, Beata Banarova, LAGOART, Create Wish Angels, Yellow House, Cathaymay Silver & Pearls, ISPCC and a Christmas Tree Seller.
The English Market will also have extended opening hours this Christmas with a late night opening on Friday Dec 21 until 8pm and a special Sunday opening on Dec 23.
