Tributes paid to football coach killed in crash on way to match

Tributes have been paid to a football coach who was killed in a car crash on his way to a Women’s League of Ireland fixture at Tallaght Stadium.

In a separate crash, a woman in her 20s was killed in Co Clare.

Castlebar Celtic coach Jeremy Dee, 51, was driving through Williams-town, Co Galway, when his car hit a wall.

His team, who were in Tallaght to play Shamrock Rovers in the league, were told of his death after they assembled to prepare for the fixture.

The match was called off and the football community paid its respects to Mr Dee.

John Delaney, FAI chief executive, praised Mr Dee’s work to nurture the women’s game.

“I had enormous personal regard for Jeremy’s wide-ranging contribution to the Irish football family,” said Mr Delaney.

“He represented all that is good about volunteerism and is an enormous loss to the development of women’s football.”

Niamh O’Donoghue, chair of the Women’s Football Association of Ireland, said Mr Dee dedicated himself to improving the sport in Connacht.

Mr Dee died on the UN’s international day to remember road traffic victims.

In Barefield, Co Clare, a woman was killed in a single vehicle incident on the M18 at 4pm. It is understood her mother, in her 40s, was also in the car and was seriously injured.

Meanwhile, gardaí are still appealing for witnesses to the hit-and-run at Ardrahan, Co Galway, on Friday which killed farmer Gerry Keane.
