Meteor unveils song of the year shortlist

Irish music fans have the chance to vote for the Meteor song of the year for 2012 after the shortlist was announced yesterday.

Among the 10 acts listed for the Meteor Choice Music Prize, Irish song of the year are Glen Hansard, Delorentos and Villagers, with the winner to be announced on Mar 7 at the Meteor Choice Music Prize awards.

Fans can vote on Meteor’s Facebook page — facebook.com/meteor — or by texting ‘SONG’ to 085 7114444.

While Oscar winner Hansard and fellow nominees The Script are no strangers to awards ceremonies, some of the other contenders are more left field, such as synth- pop track ‘Love System’ by Dublin’s Le Galaxie featuring Elaine Ma, and ’The Waves’ by the acclaimed Villagers, aka Conor O’Brien.

The performer behind the winning song will receive €3,000 while anyone who votes will be entered into a competition to win one of 20 pairs of tickets to the awards ceremony at Dublin’s Vicar Street.

Otherwise, tickets can be purchased for the event from usual outlets, including Ticketmaster.

Voting closes on Mar 3 and people can vote once a day.

DJ Tony Fenton will play two nominated songs a day on his Today FM show from next Monday.

The song shortlist was selected by a judging panel chaired by music critic Tony Clayton-Lea.

Some of the nominees are due to perform at the event while other acts due to appear on the night include Wallis Bird and The Cast of Cheers, both of whom are nominated in the album of the year category, selected by the judging panel which includes Eoghan O’Sullivan of the Irish Examiner.

Lisa Comerford, head of communications at Meteor said: “A serious number of Irish bands have made it on an international scale, demonstrating that this small country inspires and nurtures great music.”

Last year’s song of the year winner was ‘We Should Be Lovers’ by Royseven.
