Video bursts bubbles for top of the pops

It won’t be music to the ears of some aficionados but a YouTube video which has gone viral explodes some myths about who really are the kingpins of the music industry.

For example, one might have thought the ever-enduring Beatles would hold most records. But think again.

The Fab Four’s mega hit Hey Jude sold 8m copies, but that’s still 2m less than the number sold by US rapper Flo Rida’s (aka Tramar Dillard) track Low.

John, Paul, George, and Ringo are eclipsed again by the musical comedy-drama series Glee, which has had more top 100 hits than the Liverpudlians.

Meanwhile, Nashville-born singer, songwriter and rapper Kesha’s Tik Tok has sold more copies than any Beatles single.

You’d think that US president Barack Obama would have more Twitter followers than most.

But baby-faced Justin Bieber has more than 25m of them, which is more that Obama and the Dalai Lama combined.

From political power to girl power — The Spice Girls sold an astonishing 28m copies of their album Spice.

That’s more than any album produced by the dreadlocked Rastafarian Bob Marley and his band the Wailers.

Other legends are also put in their place. You’d think Elvis and Simon and Garfunkel would have produced some of the biggest hits of all time, but nothing ever sang by them was as popular as The Black Eyed Peas’ I Gotta A Feeling.
French-Canadian Celine Dion’s Falling Into You and Shania Twain’s Come On Over proved more popular than any albums sold by rock greats Nirvana, Queen, and Bruce ‘The Boss’ Springsteen.

Katy Perry’s album Teenage Dream actually ties with the late Michael Jackson’s Bad for the record number of No 1 singles they each spawned — five.

The Baha Men have won a Grammy, which is more than can be said for the likes of The Kinks, Iggy Pop, Bjork, and the late Tupac Shakur, aka 2Pac.

Rihanna has had or featured in more than 10 No 1 singles.

Spare a thought then for heavy metal outfit Led Zeppelin, who haven’t any.

The Barbados-born beauty has sold more than 25m albums and 60m singles worldwide since the beginning of her career in 2005. Home
