Burton to turn Dublin dark for Stoker story

Some might say Dublin is a scary enough place in reality, without a famous Gothic movie director putting his dark stamp on the place.

However, Tim Burton, director of hits such as Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, Sleepy Hollow, and his latest, Frankenweenie, is hoping to bring his own version of dark to the city and has a uniquely Irish topic to explore.

In line with much of his work, the Burton vehicle will be a dark tale about one of Ireland’s finest — Bram Stoker, the creator of Dracula.

Still in print after over a century and available in virtually every language, the classic horror character is one of the most famous ever created, yet little is known about its Irish author — something Burton is hoping to put straight.

“I find the story behind the man who created Dracula truly fascinating. The man created one of the most successful story genres the world will ever see and yet so few know anything about him,” Burton said.

“Stoker was such a brilliant mind, who existed with such intelligence, yet there was this darkness to him — an interest in the occult that fascinates me. So I’d love to give this story a shot, and if it went ahead, film at least some of it in Dublin where he was raised.”

The director announced himself a fan of Dublin and said the city had just the right amount of eeriness to bring Stoker’s life to the big screen — and is hoping to bring Johnny Depp and Irish stars such as Saoirse Ronan on board.

“It’s a beautiful city, it has that perfect backdrop for a project like this... dark yet inviting. It’s where Dracula was born.”

Horror is certainly a genre that is finding a home in Dublin these days, with newcomer Irish director Ciarán Foy setting his horror flick Citadel in a grim council estate inspired by Dublin’s northside. The story revolves around Tommy Cowley and his pregnant wife, who discover the local children are genuinely terrifying.

A graduate of the National Film School of Ireland, Foy’s film won the Midnighter Audience Award at SXSW, the prestigious annual film conference held in Austin, Texas.

Citadel is out on limited release.
