Assault victim was left to die

A murder investigation has been launched after an elderly man died following a violent attack and robbery in his home in Sligo.

Vintage car lover Eugene Gillespie, 67, was attacked and beaten in his home in the town’s Old Market St. He was left to die with his hands tied behind his back.

Gardaí believe he was left for up to 48 hours before he was discovered on Friday night. The house where he lived was less than 80m from Sligo Garda Station.
