Rural event to provide €1m boost for regions

A ten-day celebration of rural life is expected to generate economic activity worth at least €1 million in north Cork and east Kerry.

The “Discover Duhallow – a Day of the Region” cultural, educational, sporting and enterprise activities are funded under the LEADER Rural Development Programme.

Groups in 21 communities will hold almost 70 events — including the golden jubilee celebrations of Freemount Macra na Feirme (tomorrow-July 22), and Banteer Agricultural Show (July 22).

There will be a threshing and vintage display in Cullen on July 22, a “Grow It Yourself” garden visit in Millstreet (July 24), and a Duhallow Bird Watching seminar (7.30pm) in Newmarket on July 26.

A farm family seminar will take place in the James O’Keeffe Institute, Newmarket, at 8pm on July 23.

Arts, Heritage and Gaeltacht Minister Jimmy Deenihan will officially open the overall programme at a period costume-themed reception at the James O’Keeffe Institute tomorrow.

The IRD Duhallow integrated rural development company co-ordinates the event, which is part of an EU-wide initiative based on a concept created in Germany in 1999.

Groups in eight other countries have since developed the idea, to highlight the achievements and potential of their own regions.

IRD Duhallow chairman Michael Twohig said the programme will showcase what Duhallow has to offer those living here and those visiting the region.

Details are on www.irdduhallow.com, and an information booklet is available in local shops and businesses.
