THE number of dot.ie online registrations fell slightly, on a year-on-year basis, in the first half of the year, but a strong second quarter showed demand for domestic registrations remains strong.
Latest figures from the IE Domain Registry (IEDR) show that 19,099 registrations were logged during the first six months of this year, down by 0.13% on the 19,124 registrations made in the corresponding period last year.
However, this year’s first-half figures were heavily aided by a 1.1% year-on-year second quarter increase. Between April and June, a total of 9,448 dot.ie domains were registered, the best second quarter performance on record.
"To report a 1.1% year-on-year increase in second quarter registrations is especially encouraging at a time when conditions remain testing for Irish businesses, specifically SMEs. This increase is testament to the professionalism and service of our accredited registrars, who generate 98% of the growth and manage 96% of all registrations," commented IEDR chief executive David Curtin.
"It’s clear from the registration figures for the first six months that demand for the dot.ie name space continues to grow, as evidenced by a particularly strong performance in March and April," he added. Mr Curtin said the figures point to "steady demand" for the dot.ie namespace from Irish sole traders and limited companies, who account for 82% of registrations.
