Bord Gáis begins search for new chief as Mullins resigns

John Mullins will step down as chief executive of Bord Gáis when his contract expires in November.

Mr Mullins informed the company’s board of his decision yesterday.

In response to a query made by the Irish Examiner, Bord Gáis said: “The board of Bord Gáis confirms that it has commenced a process for the appointment of a new group chief executive, following the decision of John Mullins to step down from the position at the end of this year, on completion of his five-year contract term.”

Commenting on Mr Mullins’ resignation, the chairperson of Bord Gáis, Rose Hynes, said that while the board was disappointed at Mr Mullins’s departure at the end of his contract term, it fully understood that he wished to pursue other opportunities at this stage in his career.

“John Mullins has been an exceptional chief executive who has transformed the company over the past five years. Bord Gáis is now a fully functioning energy company, providing both gas and electricity services to 850,000 customers throughout the country, with a substantially increased asset base in power generation and wind power capacity. The board wishes John every success in his future career.”

Mr Mullins has seen a series of reductions in his pay package over the past few years. In 2010, his salary was €399,000, which dropped to €343,000 in 2010. His salary is now capped at €250,000. Mr Mullins has stated a number of times over the past year his intention to take up a position in the private sector once his contract expired. The semi-state company declined to comment on whether the terms of his remuneration was a factor in Mr Mullins’s decision to leave.

It is believed that the board had asked him to stay on for another term to see the company through the looming sale of Bord Gáis Energy and the setting up of Irish Water, which will become a subsidiary of Bord Gáis.

Mr Mullins could not be reached for comment. A Bord Gáis spokesman said the company would start the selection process soon for a replacement chief executive. Home
