The Finance Minister Brian Lenihan has declared tonight the cuts he will have to make in next year's Budget will be half what he first thought.
Mr Lenihan today announced €4bn worth of cutbacks with public servants and social welfare recipients bearing the brunt.
There was an attempt at some sweeteners with cuts in VAT, excise on drink, but a new Carbon Tax is being imposed.
Tonight Minister Lenihan said his original plan to slash another €4bn next year will now "not be necessary".
