Judge extends DSK detention period

A French judge is expected to extend Dominique Strauss-Kahn's detention for questioning in a prostitution ring case.

The former IMF chief was detained earlier by police in Lille as part of a major investigation into what has become known as the 'Carlton Affair'.

Mr Strauss-Kahn faces two charges of "pimping" and the "misappropriation of corporate funds", charges which carry up to 20 years in prison on conviction.

A British journalist in Lille, where DSK is being held, Peter Allen said there are some high profile people implicated in the 'Carlton Affair'.

"Some senior businessmen in France, and also a former police chief are all said to have been involved in this illegal prostitution racket," he said.

"All of them were and are good friends of Strauss-Kahn and there is telephone evidence that he was in regular contact with them, and indeed with 10 prostitutes who have all said that at one time or another they all slept with Strauss-Kahn."
