Egypt forces on high alert ahead of protests

Egypt's security forces are on high alert today, ahead of pro-democracy protests to mark the second anniversary of former President Hosni Mubarak's fall from power.

Authorities have boosted security around the presidential palace, the interior ministry and around Tahrir Square, as well as at key public installations.

Citywide marches are due to set off at 3 o'clock for Tahrir Square and the presidential palace where violent protests have been staged against Islamist President Mohamed Morsi.

Former President Mubrack's resignation following a popular revolt in 2011 sent shock waves across the Middle East.
