A cold and fairly cloudy day with a scattering of showers, mostly wintry with snow likely for Ulster and over the hills of north Connacht. Little in the way of brightness is expected, apart from in southern coastal regions in the morning. Fresh to strong westerly winds.

It will continue to be windy and very showery tonight with most areas having snow showers at times but sleet and hail are more likely around the coasts. Thunder is also possible. The west to north-westerly wind will reach severe gale force in western coastal areas.

Ireland tomorrow

Wintry showers for Connacht and Ulster but with a lower risk of snow than today. Brighter too with the best of the sunshine in Leinster and Munster. However, it will cloud over from the west in the afternoon with a wet and stormy evening. South-westerly gales later.

There will be further showers, although mostly affecting western regions and possibly turning wintry in the evening. Drier and brighter in Leinster. Moderate westerly winds.
