Rodriguez strike named as goal of the tournament

FIFA have announced the goal of the tournament, and Rodriguez beat Van Persie.

More than four million people voted for James Rodriguez’ volley against Uruguay and FIFA have named it the goal of the tournament.

Second place went to Robin Van Persie’s stunning header against Spain in his side’s opening game.

Van Persie’s goal even merited its own mural in Rio De Janeiro.

Rodriguez becomes the third successive South American to win the honour, following Diego Forlan in 2010 and Maxi Rodriguez in 2006.

The midfielder is on the verge of signing with Real Madrid from Monaco in a deal reportedly worth £60m.
